About The Solent

Separating the Isle of Wight from mainland England, The Solent is a stretch of water that is world famous for boating and yachting.

Many famous locations and ports lie on the shores of the Solent including the busy port of Southampton, Portsmouth – home of the Royal Navy, and Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The Solent shores also host several important nature reserves, country parks and areas of salt marsh.

Originally formed from a widened river valley thousands of years ago, The Solent has a long history during which time Romans, Saxons, Normans, Tudors and Victorians have all been seen on its waters. Many sites around the area show evidence of this occupation, including Fishbourne Roman Palace, Southsea Castle and Bucklers Hard.

The Solent is particularly famous for its popularity as a yachting destination, with many marinas and harbours in the area and major yachting events taking place during the year.
