About Portsmouth

This major port is steeped in history, and is still full of attractions today with miles of busy waterfront to explore and enjoy.

Located to the Eastern end of the Solent, Portsmouth natural harbour was originally used by the Saxons as a fishing port. However it soon developed into one of its most famous roles as the traditional home of the Royal Navy, once one of the most powerful and respected navies on earth.

With its links to the Royal Navy, Portsmouth has inevitably seen important events, from Henry VIII watching the sinking of the Mary Rose, to the launch of the D-Day invasion fleet in the Second World War.

There are numerous attractions to see and enjoy in Portsmouth today. The 170m Spinnaker Tower is one of the newest additions to area, whilst Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is one of the leading visitor attractions in the UK, where you can see the Mary Rose and HMS Victory.

Portsmouth is still an extremely busy harbour, and the nearby waterfront boasts many other attractions including shops, restaurants and museums.
